TIME MACHINESHOP

Music

In the summer of 1960, at the age of seven, I saw the MGM film, “The Time Machine". It was my introduction to the concept of time travel and one of the films which was to influence my life, pointing me towards a career in film production. The Time Machine prop, designed by art director William Ferrari, is a fascinating combination of Victorian age aesthetic and science fiction gizmo. It’s beautiful image sunk deep into the conscious of millions of moviegoers becoming an enduring science fiction icon. In 1999, I decided to build a small model of “The Machine” as a gift for my family. 2003 I started to research and construct my full scale Time Machine.  I decided not to copy the movie prop exactly but find ways to make this Machine my own. I also wanted to challenge myself to learn craftman and artisan disciplines such as metal casting, lathe work and anything else this project might demand. What began as a simple 3-month project has evolved into a 12 year obsession. When I'm working on this project, as my wife Sally will attest, I have no useful sense of time but I know that as soon as the Machine is complete, for a brief and beautiful moment... I'll be seven again.
